Do Marketplace Sales Count Toward Sales Tax Registration?

If you sell on Amazon, Etsy, Walmart Marketplace, or another online marketplace, you've probably heard that the marketplace collects and remits sales tax for you.

That's generally true—but it's not the whole story.

One of the most common questions I hear is:

"If Amazon collects my sales tax, can I ignore those sales?"

The answer is:

Not always.

What Is a Marketplace Facilitator?

Marketplace facilitators are companies like Amazon and Etsy that connect buyers and sellers. In most states, they're responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax on eligible marketplace sales.

This means you usually don't have to collect sales tax yourself on those transactions.

That's a huge benefit for ecommerce businesses.

So Why Do Marketplace Sales Still Matter?

While marketplaces often collect the tax, the sales themselves may still be relevant when you're determining whether you need to register for sales tax.

Many states have economic nexus laws based on your sales activity within that state. Depending on the state's rules, marketplace sales may be included when evaluating whether you've crossed a registration threshold.

Other states treat marketplace sales differently.

That's why there's no one-size-fits-all answer.

Don't Make Assumptions

One of the biggest mistakes I see is assuming:

"Amazon collected the tax, so I don't need to think about those sales."

Instead, think of marketplace sales as another piece of information you should understand as your business grows.

Questions to ask include:

  • Which states am I selling into?
  • How much of my revenue comes from marketplaces?
  • How much comes from my own Shopify store?
  • How does each state treat marketplace sales?

Having those answers will make it much easier to understand your next steps.

The Bottom Line

Marketplace facilitators have simplified sales tax for millions of sellers—but they haven't made it completely automatic.

Understanding how your marketplace sales fit into your overall sales activity can help you avoid surprises and make informed decisions as your business grows.

The goal isn't to make sales tax more complicated. It's to understand the full picture so you can stay organized and confident.
